What is RFID?

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the use of radio waves to read and capture information stored on a label.

Although RFID labels are similar to barcodes, they’re far more advanced.

For instance, reading information from a RFID label doesn’t require line-of-sight and can be performed over a distance of a few metres.

This also means that a single label can serve multiple readers at a time, compared to only one for a barcode – a seriously clever piece of tech.

How can it be used?
These labels can be attached to almost anything, although the usual objects are apparel, baggage, containers, construction materials, laundry, and bottles. But they can also be attached to animals, humans and vehicles.

A significant advantage of an RFID label is that it doesn’t need to be positioned precisely relative to the scanner.

For example, we’ve all had trouble trying to scan a barcode while on a self-service checkout, even though the barcode is literally inches from the scanner.

However, RFID devices work within a few feet of the scanner. This means you could put all your shopping in one bag, pop it on the scanner, and the checkout would be able to query all the RFID devices and total your purchase straight away.

This same principle can be applied when scanning boxes in warehouses too.

How will RFID labels benefit my business?

RFID can help to simplify your business, increasing your efficiency and shortening processes. It allows you to streamline your data capture procedures and increase accuracy by minimising error-prone, time-wasting manual processes.

By industry estimates, a massive amount of money is lost each year due to supply chain inefficiencies and “˜out-of-stock “˜occurrences. RFID can also help to improve this by giving more control and real-time information to manufacturers.

This, in turn, benefits the consumer by reducing the amount of “˜out-of-stock’ incidents.
