Item storage and labelling tips for stock/warehouse management

It can be a real pain trying to keep your warehouse clean, tidy and organised.

With stock flying in and out here, there and everywhere and a busy production line needing to be maintained, things can often get out of hand and easily become a mess; meaning employees can waste time looking around for products rather than getting them out to your customers.

That’s why it’s always a good idea to get your business organised, label your stock and maintain a controlled and efficient environment for increased productivity and ease.

To effectively manage your warehouse, each product in your stock must have a clear label on it with product number, quantity, basic description including vendor name and other vital details. Labelling makes identifying the product much easier.

It makes tracking easier as you are always able to know about the box’s contents with their exact quantity. This can also be done using barcodes on the label also.

Location Labelling

Before you start labelling your actual items, you need to label the location where each item will be stored.

Storage needs to be contained within sections, rows and shelf numbers.

If your storage area is very large, it would be an idea to assign zone numbers or even room numbers if needed (which should be included in the final labelling).

Also ensure that your location labels are all different to avoid confusion and keep labels consistent. Colours and images are other neat ways to keep things organised too.

Product Labelling

Once you have your storage organised and each location or zone has a name or description, then you can move on to labelling all your items.

When you label items, make sure you store them according to these labels, for example, in their colours or sizes

Store Items Alphabetically

Whether you find it easier to label your items in alphabetical order, by colour or even by numbers, it’s always worthwhile to use at least one of these organisational methods. If you’re feeling extra tidy or have a lot of stock you can use all these methods, labelling items Blue A1, Blue A2, and so on.

Create a Map

Map out exactly where each item is, with its label code and location. For larger warehouses this can be a massive time-saver and is a neat way of making appropriate use of your new labelled system. It also helps employees work more effectively and efficiently.

Use barcode labels and scanners

Barcode labels are particularly useful in busy warehouses.

Boxes can be labelled up with barcodes and simply scanned to see product information such as quantity and colour. Location labelling can also be applied to this method for even more organisation and ease.
