Soabar and the National Citizen Service (NCS)

Recently, Soabar has become a proud supporter of the National Citizen Service (NCS) in Leicestershire, a program designed to provide a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” for young people aged 15-17. NCS is an intensive four-week summer programme that aims to equip participants with essential skills for work and life, while also giving them the opportunity to take on challenges and build lasting friendships.
We believe that programmes like NCS are crucial in nurturing young people’s confidence, social skills, and work ethic, which will be invaluable as they transition from the academic world to the workforce. The programme’s focus on teamwork and communication makes it particularly beneficial for personal growth.
One of the key aspects of the NCS programme is its Social Action Projects. Each team of young people is tasked with completing around 30 hours of volunteer work for local causes. Previous projects have included:
- Improving facilities at local primary schools and youth clubs.
- Working with charities such as LOROS.
- Revamping a children’s play area in Groby.
Soabar proudly supports this phase of the programme, as it makes a significant difference to the local community, and we are thrilled to contribute to such meaningful work.
The NCS experience begins with a week away from home, where participants engage in team-building exercises, outdoor pursuits, and adventure activities. This is followed by a skills week at the University of Leicester, designed to give participants a taste of independent living. During this week, they learn new skills and gain a deeper understanding of the local community, which will be essential when it comes time to plan and execute their Social Action Projects.
In week 3, participants focus on planning their volunteering projects. They visit the locations where they will be volunteering and also take part in a First Aid course at the University. Finally, in week 4, the young people complete their 30 hours of community service, working with a variety of project providers across the county.
Soabar is especially proud to sponsor the Social Action Phase of NCS. Through our financial support, we enable young people in Leicestershire to participate in this rewarding part of the programme, which NCS themselves describe as the most exciting and fulfilling week of the experience. Feedback from past participants shows that the programme has a lasting impact, helping them build confidence and gain valuable skills that they might not have had access to otherwise.
